Self-Assessment Essay

My Process of Writing

December 16th, 2019

Dear Future me,

As the semester is reaching to an end, I want you to remember over the material you learned in Writing for the Social Science class. You have composed such a great amount of work in this class and learned new things. Their were significant assignments for this class that were new to you and at points you were frustrated because you wanted to make sure everything on your essay was well written. Most of the essays that were done were your first time doing it and because of that it has expanded your knowledge of writing.

At first you were not very interested in writing but over the course of the semester you wanted to make sure you were doing fine since your in the Early College Program. Even though this is not included in the major your pursuing which is Criminal Justice, you still wanted a good grade for this class. When their will be new assignments you will always make sure to read the task a couple of times and write down the main points. At first you will be focused too much into certain parts of the essay which was good but at the same time you had to think about the other parts. The most part you were to focus on was your body paragraphs but later realize that in order for everything to flow and make sense you have to focus on the others.

While doing the assignments you didn’t really have a process for your writing. What is writing? Throughout the essays that you have completed for this class now you know that a writing process takes some time because of drafts, organizing your ideas, and addressing what you are talking about.

The first time attending this class the genres you knew were fiction,non-fiction and poetry which are the most common ones. The first assignment you did was a transcultural interview and the objective for this task was to conduct an interview of how one’s cultural background shapes one’s viewpoints and perspectives. You didn’t really know the process of this essay since it’s your first time doing something like this and going back to your reflection for this essay, you were too focused on the person’s point of view on the topic but lost focus on how one’s cultural background shapes one’s perspectives and world views.

Throughout this essay you did learn how to be more descriptive of your interview with the interviewee, your friend, and the setting of where the interview was conducted. If you take a look underneath you can see in your introduction you were descriptive for your first draft.

You also did a good job describing the setting you were while interviewing your friend and at first you were just stuck on “how am I going to put all these interview questions into my essay” but you wanted to make sure your audience and whoever is reading this essay will feel like they are there themselves while you are conducting the interview.

If you look carefully into the first sentences it’s a run off sentence and also when you said “she is ready for the questions to be asked to her”, how do you know? So you re-wrote that into the following text.

Throughout the course, a lot have added to your writing skills. Like when the teacher divided your class into group that has helped you a lot and your writing too. For the peer reviews it allowed you to go back and fix certain mistakes in your essay such as grammatical errors, focusing on the main idea of the topic. Another major thing that has helped was that you were able to read other students essays. This allowed you to organize your own essay into an order were it will flow and for the reader to understand.

But of course not only the Transcultural Interview has helped you, another major essay has helped you was the literature review. How it has helped you was by organizing your scholarly evidence into order. By doing this it allowed your essay to flow and for the reader to understand better.

When going back to your first draft for the literature review on the effects of plastic pollution in our oceans and What can individuals in the United States do in order to help diminish plastic contamination in our oceans? In the first draft you had many evidences but didn’t really know where to place them. Now if you look back and take a look for yourself you can tell that you were just putting evidence out there.

You didn’t really have something before the evidence in order for it to flow. That’s when you started thinking about your reader, giving them some background on why the aquariums are doing this. If you take a look below now it makes more sense for your reader and yourself.

These two major essay has helped you in different ways and even though it took some time, it was worth it because you learned how to write your essay better which will help your audience and yourself as well.

Now that you know that there are other types of genres and different way to approach to an assignment it is a good skill to have for the future. A well written essay go through the process of drafts, analyzing your data and having other eyes like your peers because their advice has helped you in many ways. Your interest for writing is still the same but incase for an upcoming assignment now you know the steps to take even if the process is long, you always have to think of your reader because you want to make sure they are understanding what they are reading. Thanks to this class and your professor now you know some new things that can help you later in the future and this was another step of becoming a better writer.

Sincerely,

Your Past Self
